Orthodontist Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies can happen unexpectedly, whether due to an injury or an issue with your braces or appliances. Understanding how to manage these situations can help minimize discomfort until you can visit our office for care.

Orthodontic Appliance Issues

Braces and other orthodontic appliances are designed to be durable, but occasionally, they may become loose, bent, or broken. If you experience any of the following issues, please contact our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment.

Walk-in emergency visits cannot be accommodated to ensure proper care for all scheduled patients. In the meantime, here are some quick solutions to common problems:

  • Irritating Tie Wire – If a wire is causing irritation, cover it with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a pencil eraser or a Q-tip.

  • Loose Band or Bracket – If a band or bracket comes loose but remains attached to the wire, leave it in place and contact our office. We will determine if reattachment is necessary.

  • Broken or Poking Archwire – If a wire is poking or broken, try gently bending it with a pencil eraser or trimming it with nail clippers. If the issue persists, call our office for assistance.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you experience an injury to your mouth or teeth—whether or not you are undergoing orthodontic treatment—apply ice to the affected area immediately and contact your general dentist. A dental exam, including X-rays, may be necessary to assess the extent of the injury.

  • If a tooth is displaced, fractured, or knocked out, contact your general dentist first. They have the necessary materials and anesthesia to treat these injuries.

  • If your orthodontic appliances become displaced due to an injury, we will adjust or replace them as needed after your dentist has addressed the primary dental concern.

After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies

If you experience an orthodontic emergency that causes significant pain outside of office hours, please contact our office. We will provide information on how to reach the appropriate professional for further assistance.

Your comfort and care are our top priorities. If you have any questions or concerns about an orthodontic emergency, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team!
